A Note From Our Art Department
Good afternoon everyone, I am continuing to pray for you and your family’s health and wellbeing as we adjust to a new schedule. I understand that this adjustment comes with a unique set of challenges to each of us and I trust that God is giving you wisdom and encouragement each step of the way.As your children complete their school work for their core classes each day, there are also great ways to foster their creativity. Please CLICK HERE for the attached recommendations that I’ve made for the different grade levels. If you don’t have adequate art supplies at home, please feel free to improvise to make the most out of the activities (as I’m sure you are all becoming experts at improvising 😉). These are things that are meant to inspire creativity and for the kids to have some fun “artistic relief” during the day. Please remember that you are welcome to add to, take away, or use these activities as a starting point to branch out from!If you have any questions, you can contact me at hstepien@hpbacademy.org |
Any grade level:
- Set up a still life using anything you have at home. (Think of a theme or have your child come up with his/her own theme such as: kitchen utensil still life, plastic bottles/jars/vases, stuffed-animal still life, potted plants, sports equipment, favorite toys, different types of shoes, sleeping pets, food, contents of purse or bookbag, go on an outdoor search for leaves/twigs/small fallen branches, etc.) Encourage your child to make two or three drawings of the still life from different angles and add color.
- There are A LOT of online drawing prompts (Google: “drawing prompts for elementary/middle/high school.” Google: “Creative drawing ideas for kids”) For younger kids, you could also Google “spring coloring pages for kids,” “seek and find coloring pages,” “I Spy pages.”
- Find a nice spot to sit outside (or a window to sit by if it’s cold or rainy). Have your child draw his/her surroundings: the trees, a squirrel that runs by, a pine cone you find on the ground, the shed, the house, your neighbor’s house, a variety of leaves, small flowers that have already sprung up, their toys or sports equipment they forgot to put away yesterday, etc. They’ll be surprised how much there is to draw once they start to really look around!

Family tree craft. Obviously, you don’t have to use this specific template; you can print out a picture of any tree (or you guys can sketch one yourself if you feel up to it!) Also, if you don’t have washable ink pads, you can color on your thumb with a non-toxic, washable marker instead! https://www.goodhousekeeping.com/home/craft-ideas/a37873/family-tree-craft-for-kids/

Disney’s Imagineering in a box. I suggest when you first go to this site, click “Teacher resources” on the left-hand side. Then click “Educator’s Guide” to get an overall feel for this project. This is more in-depth but is still a good resource—especially for the extra-artsy kids 😊 https://www.khanacademy.org/humanities/hass-storytelling/imagineering-in-a-box
